Local artist’s art piece is stopping traffic and pedestrians travelling on 14th and Arapahoe in the Denver Performing Arts Complex. The 60 foot billboard of Kathy Knaus’ painting“Grinder” was installed on Monday, March 1st as part of the Denver Theatre District’s project.
Kathy Knaus is a painter and installation artist and a member of the artists’ cooperative Ice Cube Gallery at the Dry Ice Factory (3320 Walnut St) in the Rino Arts District. She currently is exhibiting “Meat Market” at the Ice Cube Gallery until March 20, 2010. The Denver Theatre District’s (http://www.denvertheatredistrict.com/) project is to expose Denver artists and galleries and add vitality to downtown Denver by placing art pieces on billboard’s and LED signs throughout the Denver Theatre District. Ivar Zeile, the creative director of the Denver Theatre District states, “Kathy Knaus’ artwork fits well into the directive of the Denver Theatre District’s goals to feature progressive and visually engaging contemporary art in the outdoor gallery that reflects the high caliber being created locally in Denver. The billboards also have specific size parameters, with the wide panoramic being the most challenging to fit without compromising the integrity of the original work. My hope is that those who engage with “Grinder” will be compelled to learn more about Kathy’s work as well as the burgeoning contemporary scene here in Denver.”
