July 2011: Ironton's Kagen Schaefer in 5280

http://www.5280.com/magazine/2011/07/boxed

Ironton Studios and Galleries, a hulking metal building divided into studios for artists who work on canvas and sculpture, looks like most other converted warehouses in the River North Art District. Around the back, beyond a secret garden area overflowing with trees, shrubs, and vegetables, is Schaefer’s woodshop.

Apr. 2011: RiNo makes the top 5 places for the BEST ART in DENVER!

Even in its early days as an Old West gold-mining town, Denver had a strong cultural presence, with a local theater holding performances ofMacbeth long before the city had even a school or a hospital. Today, Denver collects and distributes more public money for the arts than any other city in the United States. Here are some of our favorite spots to experience art in Denver.

Apr. 2011: RiNo gets its own park!

The Denver Parks and Recreation Department (DPR), working in partnership with the Trust for Public Land (TPL) and Great Outdoors Colorado (GOCO) has succeeded in purchasing a 2-acre property along the South Platte River Greenway in downtown Denver. Located at approximately 34th and Arkins Court.

The property is located within the “River North” or “RiNo” neighborhood, which is expected to redevelop from industrial uses to residential and mixed commercial uses over the next five to ten years.  DPR will build a new park on the property that will be linked to the South Platte Greenway as the surrounding area redevelops.

“I am thrilled at this investment in our parks and in our environment and its potential to foster prosperity in the developing RiNo neighborhood and business community,” said Mayor Guillermo (Bill) V. Vidal. “The purchase of this property for the development of green space will benefit all of Denver and add to the overall quality of life in our City.”

Working together DPR and TPL secured a $1 million lottery grant from GOCO towards the purchase of the property, a key component of the South Platte River Vision Implementation (RVIP), a three-year planning effort for the future of the South Platte Greenway led by DPR and the Greenway Foundation.

Another fabulous piece of public art has landed in RiNo. This one created by Ironton Studios Founder Mike Mancarella.

These large boxed one way arrows are the main feature for this sculpture, internal lighting turns the arrows into a lantern at night. We love it! It speaks to all the great RiNo studios and galleries in the area. For more information on Mike Mancarella visit his web site at Junoworks.com

Fire Clay Lofts (developed by Urban Ventures, LLC in Denver) is located on a former brick manufacturing site and covers two blocks in the Ballpark/RiNo neighborhood in Denver.  This 166 unit community was designed by two local architects: Van Meter Williams Pollack LLP & Studio Completiva.  The project was built over a 10 year period.  It is credited with catalyzing this mixed-use creative community that evolved when Lower Downtown and Coors Field were developed and many artists moved to the new neighborhood to live and work.  The developer included 20% of the units as affordable residences.  The unique design of the renovated warehouse building and the 13 new buildings are home to over 200 people who live in the city’s first industrial/residential mixed-use neighborhood.

Plus Gallery presents:

PRIMITIVES:
New Sculpture by Mike Whiting

October 21 - November 27, 2010

Opening Reception Thursday, October 21st from 6-8pm

Mike Whiting is one of the few young sculptors in the American market making an impact in both the public realm as well as amongst contemporary collectors through his exhibitions, producing an extremely focused, well conceived body of work that continues to evolve in spectacular fashion. Plus Gallery anticipates his latest solo outing "Primitives" at the core of the fall season, timed to coincide around the installation of the artist's latest major public work "Rhino" on the highly visible Broadway Corridor in celebration of the RiNo art district and procured through funds of the Broadway Viaduct Lower Maintenance District (BVLMD). Whiting's work in "Primitives" takes the evolution of his pixel-based mind-frame to the next level, drawing closer the line between the real and the virtual that is continually redefining our society.

MIKE WHITING IN THE PRESS AND DEBUTING THIS WEEK IN LA

Plus Gallery is currently featuring terrific new work by sculptor Mike Whiting in the exhibition "Primitives," on view through November 27th. Whiting's trajectory with the gallery has been an inspiration, touting one of the most fascinating developments for an emerging artist that we've come across. The fact that he's been exclusive to Plus Gallery is due in large part to the overall demand for his work as well as his success in the Public realm, something that has been noted in this week's edition of the Westword Weekly along with a writeup on his current exhibition here: http://www.westword.com/2010-11-18/culture/denver-s-art-districts-are-mostly-growing-concerns/

There's also a nice writeup on the exhibition from Telluride Inside, the premier blog for art, culture and lifestyle in Telluride and beyond, written by Plus Gallery friend and fan Susan Viebrock. You can read what she has to say about her recent visit to Denver at: http://www.tellurideinside.com/

In a land far, far away, where time is circular, where boobs are holy, poets mad, illustrious punks of progress shriek, where souls are outlawed and hearts are sick... the second coming has come and will come again. We call it Rock 'n Roll Tableau Vivant. It's like Jesus Ziggy Christ Super Stardust silent film full of NOISE. You will be guided through the perils of Jesus as he manifests in a world that bears no resemblance to our own, of course... of course.

June 2010: Congrats to CU for Winning the RMRE Challenge!

The challenge focused on a 46-acre site that included the Coliseum and its parking lots to the southwest toward Globeville Landing Park. The site sits at the crossroads of the redeveloping area north of Downtown that features nearby the RiNo arts district, future FasTracks transit stations, South Platte River amenities, and excellent highway access. One of the competition’s main assumptions was that the Coliseum had to remain the property of the city and continue as an entertainment venue. Click here for more information on the Rocky Mountain Real Estate Challenge.

Congratulations to the Flatiron Development Group from CU, we applaud your vision and thank you for engaging the RiNo Community. Click here for a summary of their visionary project.
