His pieces represent his reaction to “the profound disconnect throughout the world”. Shanafelt states, “My objects are made with an intentional absence of a comprehensible function in hopes of portraying an indistinct scene or state of being, challenging both myself and the visitor to visually and mentally probe through the forms and surfaces without any clear deduction to its purpose and/or intent”. The resulting sculptural pieces often challenge the viewer to interpret the form outside of any preconceived ideas of what the original function might have been.

HINTERLAND is pleased to announce a show which features two very interesting contemporary artists. Elena Stonaker and Jeff Page, Opening reception will be on Friday, February 24, 6 - 11p.

Also open:
First Friday, March 2, 6 - 10p
Show will run through March 16.

Jeff Page is born in Denver raised by an accountant and an artist. He studied at the San Francisco Art Institute and received his BFA in 2003 in Interdisciplinary Studies. This body of mixed media works on paper revolve around blurring of the line that separates anthropomorphism and abstraction.

Elena Stonaker's current work is an exploration in positive manifestation and metamorphosis. Elena works with transformative spiritual practices, in transcending the bleakness of physical reality and becoming beings of a lighter and more vibrant nature. While in contemporary society dolls are generally viewed as child’s playthings, historically, dolls have been used in many cultures as supernatural intermediaries used in ritual acts. The doll-maker imparts an intention upon their creation, giving it immense powers that in turn can be passed on to whoever uses or beholds it. In this sense the artist becomes the magician, the giver of life and values. The vivid colors, shiny sequins, and obsessive detailed embroidery are intended to evoke whimsy, beauty, and order in chaos.

My exhibit continues the exploration of the luscious impossibility of a woman’s body and life. I explore the issues of the body and how it affects the young and old alike.
The infatuation with youth and an idealized body is at the heart of my investigation. This series discusses the idea of a female looking at her body as dysmorphic or misshapen.
